Types of Heavy Mining Applications
On a mine site with ambient air temperatures reaching or even exceeding 50°C, you need reliable cooling equipment. Our Heavy Mining (HM) chillers are designed for such challenges, ensuring that machinery and operations can continue even in extreme heat.
The HM chillers are our flagship products, specifically engineered for the harsh conditions of WA’s Pilbara region. They offer cooling capacities ranging from 60kW to 300kW at 50°C ambient temperatures. This means that these chillers are suitable for various heavy mining applications, including supporting lubrication cooling for crushing equipment, such as High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs), Jaw Crushers, and Cone Crushers.
Our HM Chillers can also be used for milling machines like ball mills and Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills, as they generate substantial heat, as well. For precise cooling in mineral processing applications within the mining industry, our heavy mining chillers are essential for maintaining the correct equipment temperature and the quality of the processed materials.

Thermal Engineering is a trusted name in mining chillers, which is why our heavy mining chillers have been deployed in a number of mining projects to cool critical equipment. Each project has a unique set of cooling requirements and challenges that our team always aims to address, support, and improve.
We were engaged to provide cooling solutions across a wide range of crushing operations at Mount Whaleback. Utilising various size chillers from Thermals range the site has units from 115kw to 200kW.
Our goal was to provide a cooling solution for a crusher on a gold mine. A HM115 chiller was selected to provide the 115kW of cooling demand whilst installed in dry and dusty conditions with temperatures reaching towards 50C.
Thermal Engineering was engaged to provide cooling solutions for the crushing operations at Rio Tinto’s flagship Iron Ore mine – Gudai-Darri. Thermal Engineering selected, engineered and supplied our 200kW Chillers to support both primary and secondary crushing operations.
The existing units provided 15 years prior by Thermal Engineering required an upgrade to allow for increased production capacity. The new units provided were designed to include dual refrigeration systems coupled with chilled water and cooling water process circuits. Combined with an air-cooled condenser unit fitted with 4 electronically controlled fans with in-built VSD’s that allowed the chillers to provide 150kW of cooling at a remarkable design ambient temperature of 50°C
The South Flank project was Thermal Engineering’s largest order of IPA/HM Chillers at the time of order and were built to service the BHP – South Flank project which was the largest iron ore built in WA in last 50 years
